Description
100% Sangiovese. Tenuta Fontodi is Chianti's class act. Renowned for its Super Tuscan Flaccianello and the Sangiovese-Cabernet Sauvignon favorite Vigna del Sorbo, the estate’s Chianti Classico is unflinchingly reliable. Winemaking in the timeless land of Chianti Classico dates back to the 8th century, and the term “Chianti” was applied to wine as far back as 1398, and the wholly organic Tenuta Fontodi is one of many existing estates that can trace their lineage back to these historic times. Resting near Panzano in the epicenter of Toscana's viticulture, Fontodi's vines enjoy a southern aspect in a natural amphitheatre, and marl soil. These optimum conditions allow the grapes to ripen perfectly, therefore creating wines of great character and structure. The natural potential of the grapes combined with the leadership of Marco and Giovanni Manetti makes for perfection in winemaking. One of the first mono-varietal Sangiovese Super Tuscans, Fontodi's Flaccianello began as a cru of grapes from the vineyard of the same name, the "Flaccianello della Pieve"; in 2001, however, Fontodi widened Flaccianello’s base to source from the estate’s best grapes. This big red wine, born in 1981, combines all the old-world characteristics of Sangiovese with modern vinification techniques. Aged in small oak barrels for two years, this wine is all red fruits like raspberry, and red currant, then scents of eucalyptus and nutmeg at the end. The mouthfeel is breathtaking: crispy, dense, intense, vertical with salty tannins. A truly majestic wine. One cannot go wrong with one of the best Tuscan producers of the day
