Carte Blanche Chardonnay UV Vineyard 2019

100% Chardonnay. Nicholas Allen has wine in his blood. His great grandfather is none other than Clarence Dillon, the financier whose love of French wine convinced him to purchase the legendary estate, Chateau Haut-Brion, in 1935. Nicholas was destined to end up in the wine industry and in 2007 it happened with the start of Carte Blanche. The core of Carte Blanche's wine-producing philosophy is to respect the terroir in each wine, thus accepting the responsibility to honor what the earth has given us. In early 2014, Carte Blanche continued its commitment to that mantra in welcoming Helen Keplinger as their new winemaker. (Helen used to work at the Napa cult winery Bryant Family also we love her own wines, Keplinger and Vermillion labels). This Chardonnay comes from the infamous UV Vineyard, one of the best vineyards in the U.S. for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The 2019 vintage is a gorgeous, intense, racy wine of great purity. The nose is layered with lemon curd, lemon zest, orange blossom, Asian pear, oyster shell, and raw almond. On the palate, the wine is ample, yet with great tension and drive, with acidity lifting flavors of lemon curd, hazelnut, fresh pear, and pastry flour with just a hint of fresh sage. It is typical Carte Blanche, a beautiful wine that respects the terroir.
