Mullineux White Old Vines 2019

$3500

Description
65% Chenin Blanc, 13% Grenache Blanc, 10% Viognier, 10% Clairette Blanche, 2% Semillon Gris. Mullineux Family Wines was established in 2007 in the Swartland region of South Africa, owned and managed by Chris and Andrea Mullineux. Within a very short time period, the winery established itself as one of South Africa’s most celebrated wine brands, both locally and on the international front. The Swartland has very unique geology which allows for exploration of its various terroirs through Western Cape classic varieties like Chenin Blanc and Syrah, among others. The Mullineuxs are humbled by how winemaking enables them to interact with the ancient history of the mother rock. Growing up in Northern California, Winemaker Andrea Mullineux studied Viticulture and Oenology at UC-Davis before working in Stellenbosch and meeting Chris at a wine festival in Champagne. Chris is the Viticulturist, in charge of the vineyards on their farm on Kasteelberg Mountain. To add to their acclaim, Andrea Mullineux was named Wine Enthusiast’s Winemaker of the Year in 2016. Their Old Vines White is from seven sustainably farmed vineyard parcels in different parts of the Swartland: one parcel of 38-year-old Chenin and a parcel of 8-year-old Grenache Blanc on the stony Schist based soils of the Kasteelberg; two parcels of 40-65-year-old dryland bush vine Chenin, one parcel of 41-year-old Clairette Blanche and a 57-year-old heritage Semillon Gris vineyard grown on the decomposed Granite of the Paardeberg; and a parcel of 18-year-old Viognier on the iron-rich soils of the rolling hills west of Malmesbury. Barrel fermentation and malolactic are completed with indigenous yeasts, then aged for 11 months in 3rd and 4th fill French oak barrels and one new foudre. Minimal sulfur is used. South African wines don't get much love here in States, but we think when wines like this are available on our shores, it's our duty to let people know not to sleep on these wines. South Africa is a stunning country and that shows in their wines.
