Guiberteau Saumur Rouge Cuvee Les Arboises 2015

100% Cabernet Franc. There are many who make wines from their head and less that make it from their heart. Romain Guiberteau is both, but the heart is his ultimate guide. Electricity and high-frequency is the game here and you’d better be ready to get your socks blasted off when you pull the cork on one of his wines. This is not a surprise as he was mentored by legendary Clos Rougeard vigneron Nady Foucault, and his Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc wines from Saumur's Brézé hill have become nearly as sought-after as the maestro's. Romain comes from a very special hill, named Brézé, which has dense, shallow limestone bedrock that has throughout time yielded superb wine. From vines planted in 1957, Les Arboises is an organic, monopole walled vineyard from a limestone-dominant subsection of the hill of Brézé. The most graceful and mineral of Guiberteau's reds, expect an inky, spicy red with dark cherry-scented fruit and long sappy close. The electric and compacted wines of Guiberteau have exemplified the energy of this region. The recent rediscovery of this area has stirred up the scene and is nearly rewriting the expectation for the heights that Chenin and Cabernet Franc can achieve and it shows, as Guiberteau's wines are highly allocated and in the best restaurants in France.
