Thierry & Pascale Matrot Puligny Montrachet Les Combettes 1er Cru 2018
$16000
Description
100% Chardonnay. Domaine Thierry & Pascale, erstwhile known as Domaine Pierre Matrot, was established in 1914 by Joseph Matrot in the appellation of Meursault. His son Pierre took the reins in 1937 and expanded the vineyards further. Thierry, Pierre's son, took over the estate in 1976. Until very recently one might find the names of Thierry’s father, Pierre, or grandfather, Joseph on the label but from 2009 all the wines leaving the cellars will come under the name of Thierry and his wife Pascale, who retired in 2016 and now their daughters run the domaine. Everything is thought out this domaine but he does not necessarily march to the same drumbeat as their neighbors. The vineyards have been farmed organically since 2000 though are not certified as such. The whites are pressed, not left to settle unless there is a doubt about the quality of the lees, then undergo a long slow fermentation in barrels, with little new oak used. As Neal Martin of Vinous wrote, "Great wines are being made at this address, and although I think there remains some room for improvement, the Matrot sisters have already accomplished a great deal, especially given that they have only been directing the domaine for four years."
