100% Tempranillo. Alion is from the same family who owns the legendary Ribera del Duero estate, Vega Sicilia. One of the best, if not the best, producers in all of Spain. There are 130 hectares of land divided into three large blocks, seventy of which are located on the Vega Sicilia estate itself: 30 hectares in the Padilla de Duero, and another 30 hectares in the nearby town of Pesquera de Duero. Alion is the “younger sibling” to Vega Sicilia; made with the same elegance, but aged three years before release and meant to drink within the first 15-20 years, though there is no doubt that it can age longer. The 2016 vintage in Ribera del Duero is described by the Consejo Regulador as “fresher and more Atlantic in style, on the whole not unlike those of the late 80s and 90s.” On paper, the Alión 2016 is as fully charged as ever and by reducing the proportion of new oak to 80% and aging some lots in concrete, the winery has responded sensitively to the character of the vintage. The wine is extremely inviting as a result. The fruit is pure, aromatic, and complex, reflecting the varying terroir in this triangle of vineyards between Pesquera del Duero, Padilla, and Valbuena. There is spice and weight, but also great length and class. This is a true example of contemporary Ribera made without compromise.
