100% Barbera. Oddero is one of the great, historic, traditional Barolo houses with a long history spanning over 200 years. There are mentions of the Oddero family in La Morra as far back as the 1700s, though the family was likely there even before that point. For years, the estate has quietly sold a good portion of their wines to a loyal clientele, much of it to restaurants in Italy. As such, they have remained somewhat under-the-radar amongst the tier of traditional Piemontese wines. Today, Mariacristina Oddero, who took over in 1997, is passing the torch to her son Pietro and niece Isabella as they represent the seventh generation in the family to run the winery. They are both hugely committed to raising the reputation of the winery and have made significant investments in the vineyards, converting all to organics, and also in the cellar to really push the level of quality at this venerable estate. the Oddero’s use the winemaking style that best allows these sites to express their quality and character, what one might call the ‘clean traditional’ style. This style of winemaking is best because it exalts the flavors in the grapes without adding winemaking flavors that get in the way. This Barbera is an extraordinary value as it comes from old vines and is from Nizza which is a sub-region within the Barbera D’Asti DOCG which was given it’s own separate DOCG status in 2014. Comparitively, Nizza’s soil is richer in sand, the hills are steeper, and the microclimate is warmer which makes it the best place to producer Barbera and arguably the most ageworthy Barbera is made here.
