100% Pinot Noir. For nearly two decades Sam and Nancy helped other people fulfill their dreams. Now it’s their turn. Sam and Nancy know we’ve been lucky to work with some of the best in the business. Sam, in his winemaking career, has been on the ground floor of some of Napa Valley’s most exciting wine projects (like Memento Mori) in recent history, helping to plant vineyards, build wineries, and cement reputations with wines that speak of the unparalleled sites in which they’re grown. Nancy, as a chef, spent years in top restaurants in New York and Napa Valley, honing her craft and her palate beside celebrated chefs who demanded nothing less than perfection. Recently, they started their own label, Maxem. In Latin, Maxem has the distinction of meaning “best of the best.” It also combines their two children’s names, Max and Emma. With the Ulises Valdez Vineyard as our source, they make Pinot Noir from the historical Calera clone and Chardonnay from the equally acclaimed Wente clone. Sam is a winemaker; Nancy, with her laser palate, has an equal say. The grapes lend themselves to the style of wines they both love: exquisitely balanced with bright acids and high tones yet richly textured and possessing a full depth of flavor. It is their palates that have driven them here, to this style of wine and especially to the amazing UV Vineyard. The 2019 Pinot Noir (only 250 cases made!) is aged in 75% new French oak, this wine perfectly bridges the gap between seduction and sophistication, showcasing the balanced beauty that can only come from the marriage of superlative fruit and the perfect site. Maxem is one of our favorite new projects in the valley and we see nothing but great things ahead for Sam and Nancy.
