100% Nerello Mascalese. Alessandro Viola winery is a very small estate that is located near the town of Alcamo. This town is in the western part of Sicily, west of Palermo, which is not known for quality wine production. It definitely does not have the same reputation as Etna. Yet, Alessandro crafts wines that can go toe-to-toe with any of his Italian counterparts. Alessandro is one of Sicily’s wine masters: he oversees directly every aspect of production both in the vineyard and in the cellar. His wine philosophy is simple: build wine using only grapes ingredient , this isn’t due to purely ethical reasons but for a conviction gained over the years that realize the pure wine is not only possible but that the result is better. The Sinfonia di Rosso is all Nerello Mascalese (speaking of Etna!) and is farmed biodynamically. The grapes are from clay soils up at an elevation of 220 meters to receive those cool sea breezes then it is fermented with native yeasts in steel and aged for seven months in neutral chestnut barrels. This is an island wine in name and taste. Notes of red berries, Mediterranean herbs, toasty scents, and hint of salt on the long finish it is a wine that one can tell is crafted by a master. Try Alessandro’s wines and you will not be disappointed.
