97% Tempranillo, 3% Garnacha. The story of Akutain begins over four decades ago when Juan Peñagaricano Akutain was an engineer in nearby Basque Country. He would visit the great traditionalists of CVNE and La Rioja Alta which shaped his view on how wine should be grown and crafted. In 1975, he planted his first vineyard 5km west of Haro at Rioja’s epicenter with a desire to control the whole process from vineyard to bottle. He strives to craft wines that were set forth by the Grand Bodegas, but on a much smaller scale, and that singularly reflect the high elevation of La Rioja Alta. Luis Gutierrez of the Wine Advocate wrote of the wines, “The wines from Akutain were a revelation!” The Cosecha is youthful and very expressive delivering an abundance of high-toned, red fruit character with background flavors of spice. A delicious wine to pair with a variety of tapas, and a pure example of Rioja Alta terruño.
