100% Chardonnay. Whoever enjoys this Francois de Givry’s White Burgundy bottling should be thankful to Lehman Brothers. Indeed, nothing would have been possible without the 2008 financial crisis. Why? As Francois states, “Because buying some hectares of village – and even premier cru – in Côte de Beaune when you are a Parisian economist with no family connections is simply impossible. I know that for a fact because I tried – and failed – for ten years.” At the beginning of 2009, when the end of the world became a serious possibility, especially in Burgundy with exports dropping by more than 50%, he was offered the monopole of Auxey-Duresses Les Riames. To Francois, this was a shining little jewel, never polluted by chemical pesticides or fertilizers, as many more famous vineyards. Then he struck lucky when he met Anne-Claude Leflaive. She fell in love with the place and helped him to go biodynamic under the supervision of Domaine Leflaive. 2014 was the first vintage produced by Les Riames which caught the attention of leading sommeliers in Paris (at restaurants l’Astrance, Guy Savoy, Thoumieux, Les Climats…) and a couple of distributors. Then 2015 came out which is even better! We are one of the few retailers in the U.S. to carry this wine as Francois is so small and we are eternally grateful to have such a magnificent wine. This is a name to remember when it comes to up-and-coming Burgundian talents.
